Unit 1 Assessment

Due to the multi-faceted nature of my project and research, my blog has quite a good mixture of different categories. Nonetheless, I have tried to make my tags as easy as possible for the viewer to be able to explore either specific elements or general practices.

Evidence of Learning Outcomes:

1. Develop your Project Proposal to plan a challenging and self-directed programme of study.

First symposium: The video of my first symposium.

Proposal: Posts to do with planning & editing my proposal.

2. Demonstrate a critical engagement with practice-based research and contribute actively to debate and discussion.

MPR: Mid Point Review video and evaluation.

Chat Reflective Writing: Reflective writing sessions based on online chats with my tutor and peers

Experimentation: This label holds all of my experiments, from my initial After Effects experiments, to my latest video and water colour edits. (more details further down)

Sketchbook: Most of my ideas start on paper. Here you can have a look at my idea generation process.

Documentation: Documentation features material that I plan to use in my final project rather than all of my experiments.

Video: My video experiments including filming, editing and experimenting with After Effects.

At first I wasn't sure whether to use video, animation or a combination of both. I've always liked animation, but I've always leaned towards the abstract side rather than character animation. I've tried various animation tests in my earlier experiments (another link here) however I felt these weren't exactly what I was looking for.

When I got my camera, I did a few storyboards and tried to capture my first story. A friend who works in film helped me get the shots that I wanted. She also gave me access to some of her equipment since she has the same SLR as me it was easy to film the stories from two different angles simultaneously.

I'm still filming and editing videos and will probably continue this until the end of the project. This is my last capture.

Water Colour: My digital water colour experiments.

When it comes to media for my project, I wanted to try and use film together with digitised water colour. Although I knew I wanted to work with After Effects, I knew I didn't want to make excessive use of plug-ins, but rather use simple tools that will let the digitised piece stay faithful to the original.

  • In this experiment I was looking to find a way how to expand and distort the water colour. To do this, I separated the different colours in photoshop from a flat traditional water colour. I then used the turbulent displace effect on the separate layers to have maximum control on each colour. I've had positive responses to this experiment although I decided to eliminate the symmetry (as suggested by my tutor).
  • In this experiment I took the water colour further and separated each layer in different points in 3d space.  Although I liked the effect, I knew it wasn't enough for what I was looking for.
  • So finally in my later experiments I have combined the techniques of the two experiments above to produce this. Since then I've been working with both turbulent displace and rotating the water colours in 3d space.

Interface: The process of the interface that I will have in the final show.

  • Lately I've been thinking more about interface. My biggest problem was how to display any extra "buttons" without interrupting the flow of freely floating videos and watercolour. I was thinking about just having black boxes at first
  • This wasn't working out, so after discussing with the girl who's doing the code for my project, we figured we could have the videos themselves be the 'buttons' or the triggers, and at the same time have a more chance-based approach.

Recordings: Here I have kept a documentation of some of the sound recordings I have done with a number of people who gave me their story.

Music: This label only has one post so far because I have decided to work on the visual material and recordings first before proceeding to this sub-project (which you can read about in this post).

Processing: I have decided to scrap Processing from my project, but I'm still glad I had the chance to experiment with code and visuals. You can see some of my experiments here.

3. Articulate a clear understanding of the methodology and context of your creative practice in both written and verbal forms.

Research: Here you will find my research, both visual and theoretical, some of which has been referenced in my research paper .

Inspiration: Here you will find various (mostly) visual material that I find inspiring for my project.
